Please introduce yourself to our readers!
Hi, I’m Bhoomika Gupta, a freshman at San José State University (SJSU) majoring in Data Science. My goal is to create real-world impact, particularly in health tech, but more broadly, I want to build solutions that solve real problems and genuinely make a difference. I believe technology is a powerful tool, and I want to ensure it is used ethically and effectively to improve lives.
Tell us more about your background with the Responsible Computing Club.
I’m an active member of the Responsible Computing Club (RCC) at SJSU, which is affiliated with Mozilla. RCC focuses on ensuring that the next generation of technologists—students like me—understand the immense responsibility that comes with building and using AI. In an era where technology influences nearly every aspect of life, being an ethical user and developer isn’t optional—it’s essential. Through RCC, I work on fostering conversations around AI ethics, data privacy, and fairness, helping bridge the gap between innovation and responsibility. Under this group, I’ve had the absolute privilege to attend panels with esteemed experts like Dr. Lauren Klein, co-author of Data Feminism, which explores how power and privilege shape data science and advocates for more equitable and just approaches to technology. Engaging with scholars like her and industry leaders has deepened my understanding of how ethics must be woven into every stage of AI development, ensuring that innovation serves all communities fairly.
How did you first learn about Paragon, and what prompted you to apply?
I first saw Paragon in a LinkedIn post, and the moment I read about it, I knew it aligned perfectly with my vision of “making an impact.” The idea of working on real-world AI policy, contributing to meaningful change, and engaging with experts immediately caught my attention. It wasn’t just about learning—it was about actively shaping discussions around AI. At first, I wondered how much I could contribute as a freshman with limited experience. But I soon realized Paragon wasn’t about what you already knew—it was about your willingness to learn, think critically, and collaborate to solve important problems. The chance to work alongside people from all levels of experience, including those from top universities, engage in deep research, and shape real policies made me extremely eager to apply.
What is your project at Paragon, and what has been your favorite part of the project so far?
I am currently working on AI policies for the City of Albuquerque, focusing on how AI can be integrated into the city’s infrastructure while ensuring ethical safeguards. My group is absolutely incredible—everyone brings unique perspectives and skills to the table, and the collaboration makes the experience truly special. My favorite part? Honestly, so much. The hands-on exposure—directly communicating with government partners, hearing real-world problems firsthand, and working to find solutions that actually matter—is something I never expected to experience this early in my career. Being part of the research, attending info panels, and engaging in discussions make me feel like I am contributing to something meaningful, and that feeling is indescribable.
If you were to give a short testimonial for your time at Paragon, what would it be?
Paragon has been one of the most transformative experiences of my academic journey so far. The work environment is filled with passionate, driven individuals, and the amount of growth I’ve had—whether in research skills, policy analysis, or just confidence in my abilities—has been incredible. Before this, I had never done such extensive research or extracted valuable insights in such a structured way, but this experience pushed me to develop skills I never knew I had. The exposure, mentorship, and hands-on engagement with policymakers made it clear that, even as a student, I can make an impact.
What’s up next for you?
I’m currently working on a research project at my college that aims to detect the presence of coxsackievirus in water through its RNA model. I’ll also continue my work with the Responsible Computing Club (RCC), where we focus on ethical tech and responsible AI. Whatever I do next, it will always tie back to my goal: building impactful, responsible tech solutions.
Anything else you’d like to add?
One thing I’d like to add is that this experience has been a major stepping stone in broadening my horizons. As a data science major, writing a policy draft and working on AI ethics felt completely new and outside my usual scope. But that’s what made it so exciting! It was a real challenge but also incredibly rewarding to be able to contribute to something with such a direct, real-world impact. It's experiences like these that make me realize how important it is to step outside the typical technical work and make a difference in areas I never expected to explore.
What’s one thing you would tell someone thinking about applying to Paragon?
Simply GO FOR IT. Don’t be scared, don’t hesitate, and don’t think that you can’t do it—because you absolutely can. Paragon will make sure you learn, grow, and contribute in ways you never expected. No matter what stage you’re at in your career, if you’re passionate about AI and making an impact, this is a perfect place for you.
